Deadly Journey Across The Mediterranean: Dozen Drown off Libya

Image
The dangerous trip to Europe that has claimed over 60,000 people on the Mediterranean sea still does not scared a lot of people who seek to escape from poverty and conflicts in Africa and the Middle East by heading for Europe. The migrants are feared to have drowned when their rickety boat sank off Libya's coast. The Survivors told UN and aid agencies more than 120 people were on the boat when it started taking in water on Wednesday. A number of people including women and children  drowned in the chaos that followed. Nearly 90 migrants were rescued and later arrived in Italy. All of the migrants are believed to have been from Sub-Saharan Africa, including Senegal, Mali, Benin and Nigeria, Save the Children spokeswoman Giovanna Di Benedetto told the BBC. Separately, Federico Fossi, a spokesman for the UN refugee agency, told AFP: "My colleagues are interviewing the survivors... who arrived this afternoon in Augusta (Sicily), and they are talking of 35

No justice in National Assembly - Azuka Onwuka

Image
I don't care about positions in the National Assembly but it seems some people don't care about justice and balance in how positions are held by the zones. Speaker Dogara is from the North-east (Northern Nigeria) and still wants the House Leader to come from the North-West (a zone that has already produced the President) - he says he is doing it for the sake of justice and zonal balancing. The APC leaders want the House Leader to come from the South-West (a zone that has pr oduced the Vice President and the Deputy Speaker). They say they are doing it for the sake of party supremacy over elected officials. One would have thought that simple logic and fairness would have made these two groups to zone the House Leader position to the South-South, given that the zone does not have the Presidency or VP, Senate Presidency or DSP, Speakership or DS, or office of the Chief Justice of Nigeria. But nobody is even considering it, For the first time in Nigeria

Yar'Adua the best successor - Obasanjo

Image
The former President made the statement on Wednesday while giving his opinion about some views of persons who reviewed the book, “My Watch” that he may have subtly alluded to his poor judgement by the way he criticized those who came after him. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says he chose late Yar'Adua as his successor because "of all the people that are available, for successor, what we came up with was about the best that, at that time we could think of ". He gave his reasons during an interview with Channels Television at his hill top residence in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State. Even if you take your son as your successor, you are not sure of what he will do when he gets there. Don’t ever kid yourself. What do I know about any successor? What he presents. When he gets there, he presents it differently. We did our best, but if you say our best is not good enough, I will say, when it comes to your turn, do better. With all the people t

Recently N ational brodcasting commission (NBC) through its permanent secretary, Shade Temi-Esan, had said the National Broadcasting Corporation, NBC, had jammed the radio’s frequency, describing it as illegal in the first place. She spoke at the presidential villa shortly after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari on the activities of her ministry. This led to radio denouncing the claim, saying, "Radio Biafra is live in BiafraLand. They cannot even jam our local station, do they even know we also transmit via satellite and online as well?"
